Dock & Warehouse Operations
is key in trucking companies because it is responsible for
accurately and efficiently loading, unloading, storing, sorting
and assembling freight. Every workday in this area is different,
with new challenges, as all kinds of freight have to be moved
and handled. Shift work may be required. This
area also offers the opportunity to advance to management
without having to sit behind a desk every day.
General Responsibilities:
- Effectively move goods around in warehouses and to and
from trucks using, for instance, forklifts and other loading
equipment
- Safely and efficiently unload and load trucks, trailers
and other equipment
- Handle dangerous goods if necessary
Typical Jobs:
Depending on the size of the company these jobs may be incorporated
into a single position or be separate positions. Position
responsibilities may also be shared with other employees.
Dock Worker:
- Moves freight around the warehouse and to trucks and trailers
using forklifts, dollies or carts
- Checks and selecst goods to fill orders
- Sorts, handles, and loads or unloads freight to maximize
the safety of the truck and minimize the risk of damage
to the shipment during transportation
Forklift/Tow Motor Operator:
- Operates equipment in the warehouse to move freight to
various locations
- Loads and unloads trailers
- Works in cooperation with dock workers and dock supervisors
to move freight safely and efficiently
Dock Supervisor:
- Responsible for operation and quality control on the
dock for a specific shift
- Supervises and coordinates the work of dock workers
- Assigns tasks to dock workers based on schedules
- May train new employees
Warehouse Manager:
- Responsible for the entire warehouse operations, including
planning and inventory control
- Manages receiving, storage, and handling of all freight
- Enforces company policies to ensure a safe work environment
- Hires new warehouse employees

Compensation:
$9 to $25 per hour, depending on experience and company size
