Fleet Maintenace keeps trucks and trucking companies moving.  People in this area are responsible for maintaining trucks, trailers, tires and all other equipment in safe working condition.  Many people in Fleet Maintenance are skilled technicians that have gone through a comprehensive training program.  What they all share is a love for daily new challenges and problem-solving, and of course a fascination with mechanics.

General Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs
  • Perform inspections on trucks, trailers and other equipment
  • Repair and maintain all trucks, trailers, and other equipment

Typical Jobs:
Depending on the size of the company, these jobs may be incorporated into a single position or be separate positions.  Position responsibilities may also be shared with other employees.

Truck and Transport Mechanic:

  • Detects and diagnoses problems in trucks and truck-tractors
  • Repairs and maintains all systems of trucks and truck-tractors, including engines, transmissions, frames and steering systems, brakes, etc.

Commercial Trailer Mechanic:

  • Similar to Truck and Transport Mechanic
  • Inspects, repairs, maintains suspension, brake, and electrical systems of trailers
  • May work on trailer’s refrigerated systems

Wheel Installer/Tire Technician:

  • Monitors the performance of tires; often using computers
  • Repairs and maintains tires to ensure they are always safe and function properly
  • Installs tires and wheels

Welder:

  • Furnishes new trucks with auxiliary equipment, such as headache racks, tool boxes, winch decks etc.
  • Fabricates or modifies specialized equipment, for example trailers and other load-carrying structures
  • Responsible for general maintenance and up keep

Shop Floor Supervisor:

  • Prepares work schedules, allocates work to mechanics and prioritizes jobs
  • Works closely with parts supply to ensure all needed parts and supplies are always on hand
  • Supervises all shop floor personnel
  • Is usually a trained mechanic, because technical knowledge is a must

Parts Supervisor:

  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels in cooperation with maintenance personnel while staying within budget
  • Controls warranty tracking, parts core tracking and maintains all paperwork related to inventory
  • May also be responsible for service work orders and billing to customers

Maintenance Manager:

  • Manages shop floor personnel and parts supply personnel
  • Responsible for the Fleet Maintenance budget
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance programs
  • Has input in purchase and sale of equipment

Required Skills:
Depending on their position, Fleet Maintenance personnel need some or all of these skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong sense of responsibility and safety-consciousness
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Good record-keeping skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Some business and management skills

Compensation:

$36,000 - $84.000, depending on experience, responsibilities and company size
