Information Technology (IT) is crucial to the trucking industry, because effective, fast communication with customers and drivers is a key to success in trucking.  As its workforce is mobile, the industry adopted wireless technology early on.  IT professionals are responsible for the company’s PCs, network, databases, and potentially its website.  Work in this area offers a challenging, cutting-edge and ever-changing environment with a lot of opportunity for growth. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot PCs
  • Plan, set up and manage the company’s network and databases
  • Administer and potentially design the company’s website
  • Set up and manage transfer of data to government agencies, e.g., Customs

Typical Jobs:
Depending on the size of the company, these jobs may be incorporated into a single position or be separate positions.  Position responsibilities may also be shared with other employees.
Network Administrator:

  • Ensures all the company’s systems are connected and communicating smoothly
  • Installs, configures and troubleshoots PCs and peripherals, such as printers
  • Sets up and manages the company’s Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN)

Database Administrator:

  • Ensures all the company’s databases are accurate and easily accessible
  • Monitors and plans databases and their growth
  • Performs systems upgrades

System Analyst:

  • Manages all the company’s computer systems
  • Decides how the various systems must relate and integrate based on the company’s structure and business
  • Decides how changes to the computer systems must be made and documents them

IT Manager:

  • Responsible for all information and communications systems
  • Ensures reliability, integrity, and security of all systems
  • Promotes growth and development of the IT area

Required Skills:
Depending on their position, people in IT need some or all of these skills:

  • Great attention to detail, precision and accuracy
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Creativity
  • Good communication skills
  • Willingness to keep up-to-date with the latest IT developments

Compensation:
$42,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, responsibilities and company size
