Safety & Loss Prevention
is unique to the trucking industry and is charged with managing
all safety-related aspects of the company. This can
range from training, driver evaluation, to developing safe
driving procedures and policies to prevent cargo loss claims. It
is an increasingly important area because the trucking industry
is committed to sharing our roads with the public in a safe
and responsible manner. The reward for this great responsibility
is the knowledge of contributing daily to the safety of all
employees and the public.
General Responsibilities:
- Train personnel in safe operating and
driving procedures
- May administer drug and alcohol
testing programs
- Design and implement policies to reduce
personal injury, and cargo and equipment losses
Typical Jobs:
Depending on the size of the company, these jobs may be incorporated
into a single position or be separate positions. Position
responsibilities may also be shared with other employees.
Driver Trainer:
- May recruit, hire and assess drivers
- Trains and orients new hires in safety
and special commodity handling
Loss Prevention Administrator:
- Reduces risk related to equipment damage,
personal injury and cargo claims
- Works with the local workers' compensation
board to make sure employees are covered for all work-related
injuries
- Works with others in Safety & Loss
Prevention to develop and administer prevention policies
that minimize risk for employees
Safety
and Compliance Administrator:
- Ensures the company complies with all
laws that regulate safety in the trucking industry
- Works with others in Safety & Loss
Prevention, Fleet Maintenance (link), and Operations (link)
to ensure all records on training, maintenance, and vehicles
and drivers are accurate and in compliance
- Reviews drivers’ logbooks and
maintains driver records and the company’s official
safety record
Safety & Loss
Prevention Manager:
- Understands both the company’s
operations and all safety-related laws imposed on the trucking
industry
- Responsible for planning and implementation
of all Safety & Loss aspects, including road safety,
safety compliance, freight claims, and personal injuries
- Advises others in the company on regulatory
requirements related to safety and hazard control
Required Skills:
Depending on their position, people in Safety & Loss
Prevention need some or all of these skills:

skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Good record-keeping skills
- Attention to detail
Compensation:
$40,000 to $100,000 depending on experience, job responsibilities
and company size
