Sales & Administration has
the important task of supporting and enabling the work of
everyone else in the company. People in administration
handle accounts, generate new sales, manage the company’s
employees and are responsible for all licenses and permits. This
area is very versatile. Work in Administration can
be self-reliant, routine and predictable (such as in accounting)
or fast-paced, creative, and interactive (such as in sales
and marketing). Shift work may be required or the job
may be 9-5. Administration is an area that offers a
position for every skill-set and lifestyle.
General Responsibilities:
- Support Dispatch & Operations
- Manage and administer all the company’s efforts
related to finances, personnel, marketing and sales, and
licensing of vehicles and equipment
Typical Jobs:
Depending on the size of the company these jobs may be incorporated
into a single position or be separate positions. Position
responsibilities may also be shared with other employees.
Accountant:
- Manages accounts receivable so invoices and receipts
are correct and money is collected from customers on time
- Manages accounts payable so suppliers of fuel, insurance,
equipment and other supplies are paid accurately and on
time
- May liaise with banks and other financial institutions
- Keeps thorough records so there is always an accurate
picture of the company’s financial situation
Licensing/Permitting:
- Ensures vehicles are properly licensed for each municipality,
province and state the company operates in
- Manages records of all licenses and permits required
Sales/Marketing Representative:
- Has knowledge of all equipment, routes, rates, and service
options
- Creates new business for the company
- Ensures customers’ requirements are met
- Develops and introduces new services
Personnel/Human Resources Manager:
- Develops and administers all company policies regarding
recruitment, wages and salaries, benefits, training and
health and safety
- Maintains employee records
- May interview candidates for job openings
Required Skills:
Depending on their position, people in Sales & Administration
need some or all of these skills:
- Solid administrative and computer skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail
- Business skills, such as accounting, sales and marketing
Compensation:
$35,000 to $80,000 depending on experience, responsibilities
and company size
Training:
- High-school education is required
- For accounting, sales and marketing, and human resources
post-secondary education at a college or university

- On-the-job training may also be possible for positions
in accounting, sales and marketing, and human resources
- For licensing/permitting no specific courses are available
and on-the-job training is most common
- Financial assistance may be available
